PEOPLE OF COLOR & MED MAL
Despite all of our efforts the VJC Inc. has been unable to connect with people of color who have been victims of medical malpractice. We have been contacted by one male who alleges that he was involuntarily sterilized. These victims are simply not coming forward.
We understand that people of color are going to be less likely to come forward due to the apathy regarding injustice that they have experienced. People of color certainly have no reason to trust that our organization is any different. We believe that there is much more to their lack of representation in the patients rights movement.
The privileged, middle-aged, white female survivor of medical malpractice struggles ridiculously and fruitlessly for justice and accountability. This coupled with the stories of terror from the elderly and their loved ones certainly begs the question, "What is happening to people of color?"
We watch the medical community make value of life decisions daily. We know how these decisions effect the elderly and disabled. We wonder where the lower income, less privileged people of color are falling on a value of life scale that is, all too often, determined by privileged, white men.
